EMBRAER BRINGS KC-390 TO NIGERIA FOR DEMO FLIGHTS

Nigeria is the latest African country Embraer is courting with its KC-390 multi-role tanker/transport, demonstrating the aircraft to the Nigerian Air Force ahead of the World Defence Show in Saudi Arabia.

Flight tracking data showed the aircraft (PT-ZNG) arrived in Abuja on 27 January, and made demonstration flights to Kaduna before departing for Dakar, Senegal, on 30 January. The aircraft was on display at the World Defence Show 2024, which ran from 4 to 8 February.

Embraer instructor pilot Marco Aurélio Oliveira told Janes that his team had flown three to four days of demonstrations in Nigeria, showcasing the aircraft as a potential replacement for the Nigerian Air Force's ageing fleet of Lockheed Martin C-130H Hercules that has been in service since 1975.

Oliveira said the flights showcased the KC-390's tactical air mobility, airdrop, paratrooper, search-and-rescue, and aerial refuelling capabilities, as well as its relative ease of maintenance.

The Nigerian Air Force is expected to take delivery of two C295 medium transports from Airbus, but there is a requirement for a larger transport, such as the Airbus A400M, Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules, and Shaanxi Y-9. Janes reports a contract is expected to be awarded before 2025.

Embraer has previously demonstrated the aircraft to South Africa and Rwanda, amongst others. It estimates Africa will need 105 aircraft in the C-390 class over the next 20 years, with global demand for this category amounting to 490 aircraft.

In 2022, the C-390 toured two African and eight Middle Eastern countries, of which some had specifically asked to see the aircraft, indicating strong interest in the type. In November last year a KC-390 arrived in Rwanda before flying to South Africa where it was demonstrated to the South African Air Force and other government entities before departing for Ghana, via Namibia, arriving back in Brazil on 27 November.

Embraer is optimistic about C-390 sales globally, especially as military transport fleets are ageing. The C-390's ability to function as an air-to-air refuelling (AAR) tanker (as the KC-390) adds to the type's appeal. With a probe and drogue system, the KC-390 can transfer fuel to receiver aircraft using wing pods.

The C-390 can carry a 26 tons payload and flies at 470 knots/870 km/h.

THE CONNIE IS COMING TO SUN 'N FUN 2024

The 50th Anniversary SUN 'n FUN Aerospace Expo will play host to hundreds of restored vintage aircraft over the week-long event in Lakeland, Florida this April 9-14, 2024. Flying history on display in the air and on the ground during SUN 'n FUN will include a rare example of the most iconic four-engine transports of the 20th century, the Lockheed VC-121A "MacArthur Bataan." MacArthur Bataan, built in 1948, is one of only two of its type remaining airworthy in the world.

The VC-121A is more commonly recognized by its commercial aircraft name, Constellation, or simply Connie. With its graceful lines, distinctive tri-tail design, and extensive service with numerous airlines, the Connie is among the most recognized aircraft ever built.

MacArthur Bataan is a Connie with a long career of military and NASA service, was later nearly scrapped after years of outdoor display, and was recently extensively restored to airworthiness by the San Antonio, Texas-based Air Legends Foundation, which currently operates it.

01 Photo Scott Slocum This example of the VC-121 was among several used by the U.S. Air Force in 1949 to fly relief missions over the Atlantic during the Berlin Airlift. During the Korean War it served as the flying command post of General Douglas MacArthur, who named it "MacArthur Bataan" in honour of the Americans and Filipinos who perished during the infamous Bataan Death March of 1942.

Bataan later served to carry many top generals and officials including President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Relegated to the boneyard in 1966, NASA soon repurposed Bataan to serve as a flying test bed used to calibrate ground tracking stations during the Apollo Program.

When that program ended in 1970 it was acquired by the Army Aviation Museum at Fort Rucker, Alabama, for static outdoor display. In 1993, Ed Maloney, founder of the Planes of Fame Museum in Chino, California, acquired Bataan and returned it to airworthy status. Painted again in McArthur's colours, it flew on the air show circuit for a year until Bataan was placed on static display at Planes of Fame's Valle, Arizona museum location.

In 2015, Rod Lewis, owner of Lewis Air Legends and the Air Legends Foundation, purchased Bataan and hired Steve Hinton's Fighter Rebuilders, located at Chino, to undertake the aircraft's complete restoration. On 20June, 2023, the Air Legends Foundation proudly saw Bataan's return to the skies and a month later its air show debut at Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

Bataan is scheduled to arrive at Lakeland Linder International Airport on Tuesday, April 9th, during the SUN 'n FUN airshow, and fly in the show again on Wednesday, April 10th. After static display on Thursday, 11 April and Friday, 12 April, it will depart after its appearance in the air show on Saturday, 13 April.

EAA AIRVENTURE OSHKOSH 2024 TO LIGHT UP NIGHT SKY WITH 500-DRONE PERFORMANCE

The growing aerial art form of lighted drones is coming to EAA AirVenture Oshkosh in 2024, as Starlight Aerial Productions brings its spectacular displays to night air shows on July 24 and 27. The 71st edition of the EAA's fly-in convention is coming to Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh on July 22-28.

"Drone shows have emerged as a marvellous way to add technology, colour, and entertainment to nighttime events and for us, it's a perfect complement to the skill and excitement brought to the legendary Oshkosh night air shows by our aerobatic pilots and aircraft," said Rick Larsen, EAA's vice president of communities and member programs, who coordinates AirVenture features and attractions. "This addition will make the night show even more memorable in 2024."

Starlight Aerial Productions, based in Michigan, most recently filled the night sky over Detroit with a 400-drone show that celebrated the NFL Detroit Lions' appearance in the NFC Championship Game. The Oshkosh performance will include American-made Lumenier ARORA drones equipped with LED lights that can create more than 4 billion colour combinations along with animated sequences that are tightly synchronized to a musical score.

Starlight's parent, Great Lakes Drone Company, made its initial appearance at Oshkosh in 2018 with a sample of the then still-emerging technology. Today's drone shows feature innovations that make flying hundreds of drones more efficient and capable of executing much more complex formations.

"Today's drone shows are pushing the boundaries of aerial entertainment and creating moments that leave an indelible mark on the heart and mind," said Matt Quinn, CEO of Great Lakes Drone Company. "The Oshkosh shows will celebrate human ingenuity as a testament to the unyielding spirit of exploration that aviation embodies."

EHANG AIR MOBILITY MKT PROSPECTS TAKING FLIGHT

EHang Holdings Ltd, a Chinese urban air mobility (UAM) technology company, is ramping up efforts to bolster commercial operation of electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft (eVTOL) in aerial sightseeing, tourism and logistics, as part of a broader push to expand its footprint in the emerging low-altitude economy sector.

The company recently announced its certified EH216-S pilotless passenger-carrying aerial vehicles have successfully completed maiden commercial flight demonstrations in both Guangzhou, Guangdong province and Hefei, Anhui province. The move marks another major milestone toward normalizing EH216-S flights for airborne sightseeing at local scenic spots.

The first EH216-S pilotless passenger-carrying aerial vehicle has been delivered to an intelligent aviation technology company in Guangzhou and was first deployed at an operating site in Jiulong Lake Park.

More operating venues and flight routes for aerial sightseeing and logistics are under development in Huangpu district, Guangzhou, EHang said.

In addition, Guangzhou Development District Communications Investment Group Co Ltd and Guangzhou Industrial Investment Capital announced they would jointly establish Guangzhou Development District Low-altitude Industry Venture Capital Fund with a target size of some 10 billion yuan ($1.4 billion).

The Hefei demonstration was conducted in Luogang Central Park, which covers a total area of 12.7 square kilometres, and has been designated by the Hefei municipal government as an eVTOL aircraft operating site. The local authority plans to collaborate with EHang to expand aerial sightseeing flight routes and services to more scenic spots in Hefei.

The low-altitude economy, which was emphasized as one of the strategic emerging industries during the annual tone-setting Central Economic Work Conference held in December, has gained strong support from many local governments across the nation. It has been recognized as a promising sector with strong potential to become a new engine for bolstering the country's economic growth.

Guangzhou, Hefei and Guangdong's Shenzhen have rolled out favorable policies, such as providing subsidies and incentives, to boost development of the low-altitude economy and build up related industrial clusters.

Yang Sumei, an associate professor at Guangzhou Maritime University, said the low-altitude economy serves as an important driving force for cultivating new productivity boosters, and has huge market potential.

Yang said more efforts should be made to establish applicable rules and standards to better regulate the fast-developing sector, as well as accelerate construction of low-altitude infrastructure, intelligent management and operating platforms.

According to a white paper released by the International Digital Economy Academy, the comprehensive contribution of the low-altitude economy to China's overall economy will reach between 3 trillion yuan and 5 trillion yuan by 2025.

EHang has also launched the nation's first UAM operation demonstration centre in Bao'an district, Shenzhen. Covering approximately 4,600 square meters, the centre hosts a heliport for EHang's pilotless passenger-carrying eVTOL aircraft EH216-S, hangars, a command-and-control centre, a passenger waiting area, a service centre and other essential amenities.

Yu Zhanfu, a partner at Roland Berger, said eVTOLs need to undergo full verification regarding safety and technological stability in sparsely populated areas or scenarios, such as natural landscape tourist destinations in the early stages, before they can truly enter the urban air mobility segment.

20 FEBRUARY 2011

Death of Barbara Harmer, British airliner pilot, first qualified female Concorde pilot.

Born in Loughton, Essex in the UK Barbara Harmer left school at age 15 to pursue a career in hairdressing. Harmer's first experience in the aviation industry was five years later when she left hairdressing to become an air traffic controller at London Gatwick Airport.

She studied for two years to gain a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL), which she obtained in May 1982. She then made over 100 applications before securing a job as pilot at Genair, a small commuter airline based at Humberside Airport.

In March 1984, Harmer joined British Caledonian and flew BAC One-Elevens for three years.[2] She then started flying the long-haul McDonnell Douglas DC-10. In 1987, British Caledonian merged with British Airways, the airline operating Concorde in the UK. At that time, British Airways employed over 3000 pilots, but only 60 of them were women and no woman had ever piloted Concorde.

Harmer was chosen to undergo the intensive six-month conversion course for Concorde in 1992 and on 25 March 1993 Harmer became the first qualified female Concorde pilot and later that year made her first Concorde flight as First Officer to New York City's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK).

After Concorde, Harmer converted to the Boeing 777 until taking voluntary redundancy in 2009.

In 2013 she succumbed to ovarian cancer passing away at St. Wilfrid's Hospice, Chichester, aged 57.
