EDEX 2018

The 2nd edition of EDEX, EDEX 2021 took place from 29 November to 2 December in the Cairo International Convention and Exhibition Centre, Egypt. Over 30,000 people attended the event that hosted 21 international pavilions which included some 400 exhibitors.

More than 40 ministers of defence and military production as well as military commanders formed part of the VIP contingent that visited EDEX 2021.

The award-winning show presented a unique opportunity for exhibitors to showcase the latest technology, equipment and systems across land, sea and air.

EDEX is the only tri-service defence and security exhibition in North Africa and is fully supported by Egyptian Armed Forces.

With 920,000 military personnel, the largest military power in Africa and one of the leading forces worldwide, Egypt is the ideal setting for a large-scale defence & security event. In addition, Egypt has historically maintained continuous investment in the latest weaponry as a defence strategy and has strengthened national production lines across a range of military complexes.

Most of the major defence suppliers had a presence at EDEX including among others, aviation heavyweights Northrop Grumman, Airbus, BAE Systems, Bell, Boeing, Grob Aircraft, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, Russian Helicopters, Leonardo, Lockheed Martin and Dassault Aviation.

Lockheed Martin

Lockheed Martin, A global security and aerospace company that employs approximately 100,000 people worldwide, has once again shown their support for EDEX, by confirming their participation as a Gold Sponsor for the second edition of the event.
Through participation in EDEX 2021 and beyond, Lockheed Martin actively builds on a strong, 45+ year partnership with the government and people of Egypt. The company's display at its booth in hall 2 included the F-16, Sniper® Advanced Targeting Pod and C-130.

Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd

HAL's strengths are R&D, manufacture/overhaul of fighter/trainer/transport aircraft, helicopter, engines and systems. Among the company's growing list of aviation products is the HAL Tejas, an Indian multirole light fighter designed by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) for the Indian Air Force and Indian Navy.
The Tejas is the second supersonic fighter developed by HAL after the HAL HF-24 Marut. The Tejas achieved initial operational clearance in 2011 and final operational clearance in 2019. The first Tejas squadron became operational in 2016, as No. 45 Squadron IAF Flying Daggers, was the first to have their MiG-21s replaced with the Tejas. The Tejas currently has three production models - Tejas Mark 1, Mark 1A and trainer variants.

Grob Aircraft

GROB AIRCRAFT is one of the world's largest and most experienced composite aircraft manufacturers since 1971. Within its 50 years of history, Grob delivered more than 3,500 aircraft that have flown over seven million hours on five continents.
The Grob G 120TP is a two-seat, single-engine military trainer aircraft manufactured by Grob Aircraft. It offers a cost-effective military training solution for air forces. The G 120TP is intended for basic and advanced pilot training missions, as well as aerobatic manoeuvres such as spins, loops, rolls, stall turns and outside turns.

Boeing

Boeing, an EDEX 2021 Silver Sponsor for EDEX 2021 during the expo, shared new capabilities that Boeing brings to the market with platforms such as AH-64 Apache, CH-47 Chinook, KC-46, F-15EX, T-7, Integrator ER and Wave Glider, as well as showcasing our Boeing Global Services portfolio with sustainment, modernisation and upgrades.
Rick Lamester VP Business Development, Defence, Space and Security in the Middle East, North Africa and Turkey said that the expo presents Boeing with an opportunity to showcase its latest capabilities, technologies and service offerings across land, sea as well as air for customers in Egypt and across the Middle East region.

Egypt

Egypt displayed two locally produced drones that made their debut at the Egypt Defence Expo.
The Nut drone, which was co-produced by the Arab Organization for Industrialization and the Military Technical College, can perform tactical reconnaissance missions during the day and night using electro-optical technology.
The Yabhon United 40 is a medium-altitude, long-endurance UAV capable of autonomous flight operations. It is produced by Adcom Systems for the United Arab Emirates Air Force.
EJune-30 SW can automatically take off and land. It is 8.9 meter long and has a wingspan of 12 meters, a maximum take-off weight of 1,400 kilograms, a maximum speed of 260 kph, an endurance of 24 hours, and a maximum operating altitude of 7,000 metres.

Northrop Grumman

The Egyptian Ministry of Defence announced that it is in discussions with the United States to acquire Northrop Grumman's E-2D Advanced Hawkeye airborne early warning (AEW) aircraft.
The Egyptian Air Force (EAF) is one of the few Arab air forces with airborne early warning as well as airborne electronic warfare capability, flying E-2C Hawkeyes, C-130H Hercules electronics intelligence (ELINT) aircraft and several Beech 1900 ELINT aircraft, among others.

Dassault

Announced at EDEX 2021 was that a contract for the acquisition by Egypt of 30 additional Rafales to equip its air force came into force.
With over 10,000 military and civil aircraft (including 2,500 Falcons) delivered in more than 90 countries over the last century, Dassault Aviation has built up expertise recognized worldwide in the design, development, sale and support of all types of aircraft, ranging from the Rafale fighter, to the high-end Falcon family of business jets, military drones and space system.

Russian Helicopters

"Russian Helicopters" Holding Company (part of Rostec State Corporation) presented a wide range of military and civil helicopters to potential customers at the expo. Guests and participants visiting the company's display had the chance to get acquainted with the Ka-52 and Mi-35P as well as with military transport Mi-17V-5.
Rosoboron export's stand displayed 350+ products, including scale models of the Yak-130 combat training aircraft, Mi-35M transport/attack helicopter, Ka-31 radar picket helicopter and the Rubezh-ME coastal defence missile system.

Airbus

Airbus stated that it joined the second edition of Egypt's EDEX, the only tri-service defence and security exhibition in North Africa, to highlight how the features of its Tactilon Agnet solution can support smart collaboration and communication within defence and military organizations.

EDEX and South Africa's AAD are the only two exhibitions of their kind on the African Continent. AAD is held on a military base and thus allows for a large static park as well as live displays whereas EDEX is an exhibition centre-based expo. The number of visitors is therefore much lower than AAD. What counts in its favour is its relative proximity to the European, Middle East and Far East markets compared to ADD.
