Oshkosh 2015 Day Two

By the Pilot's Post Team

On day one Oshkosh 2015 experienced an increase in numbers across the board. Camping attendance is up by 13% whilst visitors number have increased by 7% and almost a 1,000 more aircraft arrived compared to the same period for 2014. This is good news indeed, not just for AirVenture but for the aviation economy in general.

Day two was one of the best day's ever at Oshkosh. The highlight of the day was the arrival of two F-22 Raptors. The Lockheed Martin designed F-22 Raptor is the result of the USAF's Advanced Tactical Fighter program. The single-seat, twin-engine, all weather stealth tactical fighter aircraft was designed primarily as an air superiority fighter, but has additional capabilities including ground attack, electronic warfare, and signals intelligence roles.

The afternoons show was dominated by Warbirds and the sky was filled with types to many to mention.

An early morning visit to the Fun Fly Park is a must. Although more sedate than the high power afternoon shows the aircraft taking off and landing from this short grass strips embodies the spirit of grass roots aviation.

The afternoon's aerobatics was truly amazing with the Screaming Sasquatch stealing the show. Sasquatch started life as 1929 Waco Taperwing, the plane of choice for barnstorms in the 1930's and 1940's. The addition of a General Electric CJ610 (J85) Jet Engine with 3,000lbs of thrust coupled with the Waco's Pratt & Whitney 985 Radial Engine allows Sasquatch to achieve feats other stunt planes are unable to do.

Tomorrows highlight will most likely be the arrival of the F-35.
