Santaco Express! That’s one of South Africa’s more colourful aviation stories — a case study in ambitious plans that ultimately ran out of runway (excuse the pun). Here’s the lowdown on Santaco Express and their Boeing 737-200, ZS-SSZ:
What was Santaco Express? - The new airline was launched on16 September 2011 by Santaco, the South African National Taxi Council. The idea was to provide affordable air travel between Johannesburg and key regional destinations, primarily targeting minibus taxi users who could now "fly like the wealthy" at competitive prices.
It was meant to be a "people’s airline" — part of a bold plan to expand the taxi industry into the skies. The airline used a single Boeing 737-200, registered ZS-SSZ, which they leased from Jetworx (a local aircraft maintenance and leasing firm). It was initially planned to fly routes like Johannesburg to Bhisho and other under served areas.
What went wrong? - The airline barely got off the ground. The launch flight happened in September 2011, but commercial operations never really took off properly. There were a mix of regulatory, financial, and operational challenges.
Some issues included: Lack of proper long-term funding. Low passenger demand on the targeted routes and questions around whether they had the right operating licenses and approvals as well as allegations of internal disputes within Santaco itself over how the airline was being run.
By 2012, the airline project was effectively grounded.
What happened to ZS-SSZ? - The B737 had a long and interesting history before and after Santaco Express: It was originally delivered to South African Airways back in 1981. After its SAA career, it was operated by a few smaller South African carriers. During the Santaco Express period, it wore a distinctive livery with the Santaco logo and branding. After Santaco Express collapsed, ZS-SSZ was returned to Jetworx, who continued to store the aircraft.
The end of the road - After sitting idle for some time, the B737 was systematically stripped for parts. It was eventually scrapped at OR Tambo around 2014/2015 and the fuselage cut up for scrap metal.
Legacy - Santaco Express remains a fascinating "what could have been" in South African aviation. It was an ambitious attempt to bridge the gap between South Africa’s road and air transport sectors, but ultimately, the airline world proved a lot tougher than the taxi rank.
