The Pretoria branch of the SAAF Museum is based at AFB Swartkop, now Air Force Mobile Deployment Wing AFB. There are two other branches, one in Cape Town at AFB Ysterplaat, and the Port Elizabeth branch based at the airport. All of which are well worth a visit.
All branches are open on weekends and are manned by a group of dedicated volunteers known as 'Friends of the Museum'. Only the Pretoria Branch holds an open fly day when museum pilots fly the airworthy aircraft.
No entrance fee is charged but donations are welcome. The museums receive no financial support from the SAF and solely rely on donations and funds raised from the yearly museum airshow.
The weather was perfect for flying on Saturday 2 March and a large crowd flocked to the museum. In action on the day were a nice variety of the museum's airworthy assets.
Why not visit the next open day on Saturday 30 March. Kids and wifes are welcome. Tasty Boerie Rolls and referments are on sale.
