Heinie Keyser's Warbirds at Barnstormers 2023

Heinie Keyser of the Barnstormers RC Club this year again organised one of his very popular warbird days. Almost twenty pilots and nearly forty warbirds of various scales were either on static display or took part in the mornings display flying.

It was rather misty when I arrived. Somehow though the mist lend an air of authenticity to the mostly WWII aircraft parked in clusters facing the flag of the country that they represented. One could easily imagine you being in Europe during the last major war.

As with all aviation event this one also started with a pilot's briefing where the safety rules were explained by Heinie. By then the weak but welcome winters sun had burned the mist away and unlike the last couple of days it was actually quite a pleasant morning although there was at times a rather strong wind that was however well handled by the pilots.

Then the first aircraft took to the sky. Most of the common types used during the war was represented Also featuring were a couple of electric ducted fans jets of more recent origin.

Leon Breytenbach a SAMAA-member and well known SFX expert who I had met the previous Saturday when I popped in on my way home had told me of the event and I also later got a WhatsApp message from Bob Skinner. I'm glad that they both had reminded me because it was a really pleasant morning that was quite well supported by not only club members but others as well.

Leon had constructed a village out of cardboard boxes complete with German wreck which he and his team with the help of a squadron of warplanes blew up. It reminded me of CC Pocock's wall of fire at airshows in the good old days.

Barnstormer is on the Bapsfontein/Bronkhorstspruit Road, take the R21 offramp and follow that past ERWAT on the left. Go over the railroad bridge and then about 500 metres further turn of to the left into the dirt road leading to the club. The rurn of is before the you get to the little bridge over the spruit.

Heinie's Warbird Day is a must on the R/C model aircraft calendar. For more information, contact: www.barnstormersmfc.com.
