The Tenth Kroon Fly - In - 05.06.2021

By Jaco Pitout

The Kroon Fly-In is a highlight on the calendar and this tenth edition of this very popular fly- in did not disappoint. I arrived at Kroon Airfield early on Saturday morning 5th June to capture the action for PilotsPost.

The airfield was already a hive of activity as I arrived at about 8am. The fly in was combined with a market where local farmers and crafters could exhibit their produce and wares. A wide variety of products were on offer from leather goods to décor and everything in between. The selection of food was incredible! Rib burgers, pancakes, coffee and candy-floss if you have a sweet tooth!

I took up position on the northern side of the runway to capture some of the arriving aircraft.

Local flying instructor Marius Nel also took advantage of the crisp clear skies and gave a passenger a quick flight.

Marius and his passenger continued to climb overhead, possibly for the passenger to get a better look at the surrounding Magaliesberg mountain range. Marius then reported that the passenger had become unruly. Marius gave the passenger two choices, I believe, choice number one was to calm down and land with the aircraft or choice number two was to leave the aircraft there and then. Within seconds the passenger had made his decision…

The passenger was none other than local sky-diving ace, Graham Field, who thrilled the crowd with his trademark swoop arrival as he made a pin point landing on the flight-line.

Once the paradrop was complete, arrivals could resume and I returned to the side of the runway to capture these images.

The crowd was treated to a formation fly-by lead by Jason Beamish. After two flat passes, the four-ship formation disappeared over the horizon.

During a break in arrivals and departures, a model airplane was displayed to the delight of the visitors to the airfield.

With festivities drawing to a close I took up position at the far end of the runway to capture some of the departing Fly-in visitors.

As I walked to my car, I reflected on what had been an incredible day out in the winter sun. I saw some children having fun with their newly acquired kites and it dawned on me that in these times, perhaps we should take some time out and play or live without fear, just for that moment.

Thank you to the entire team at Kroon Airfield and Rosslyn Micro Flyers for hosting PilotsPost! We had a fantastic day!
