Springs Airfield's Free Breakfast Fly-In 2026

Nothing in life is free. Wrong! At Springs Airfield, breakfast has been free for as long as I can remember.

That may explain why, despite a countrywide disruption to fuel deliveries and Avgas prices nudging the R39-per-litre mark, that a fair number of aviators still made the trip to Springs for the annual Breakfast Fly-In.

I did notice, however, that a nearby ice bucket was being fed with donations to help offset the cost of the quality ingredients. The breakfast was prepared and served by the friendly ladies and gentlemen of the Ekurhuleni East Flying Club, formerly known as the Springs Flying Club.”

But the free breakfast is only part of the attraction. Springs has so much more to offer.

The airfield is home to the Classic Flying Collection, housed in several hangars and boasting what must be one of the finest collections of Tiger Moths, Chipmunks and Austers, alongside numerous other immaculately maintained classics. There is also an impressive collection of restored Second World War military vehicles. These treasures are a testament to the dedication and passion of Dev Howett and the late Gavin Brown. RIP, Gavin.

What better way to spend a Saturday than admiring these beauties, parked with almost military precision on the grass apron, while catching up with old friends, making new ones and enjoying a cup of coffee - free of charge, of course!

For me, one of the greatest attractions of any fly-in is the opportunity to reconnect with friends one hasn't seen in ages. It is a chance to catch up on what is happening, exchange stories and discuss what lies ahead for the aviation industry we all love.

Parked in the shade on the way to the clubhouse entrance was one of my all time favourite aircraft this stunning Ercoupe that belong to a good friend Lex Erasmus. She is for sale at a bargain prize of R450,000. For more information contact Lex on 082 624 8014

The Ekurhuleni East Flying Club at Springs Airfield is far more than just a licensed municipal airfield. It is a vibrant community of aviators, aircraft restorers and enthusiasts, all united by a shared passion for flight.

Springs is also home to the Ekurhuleni East Aviation Society, formerly the East Rand Flying Club. The airfield is shared by a variety of aviation operations, including microlight, ultralight and gyrocopter clubs, flying schools and private operators.

Facilities include a fuel bay, a clubhouse and numerous shared hangars. The club boasts a membership of almost 200, while 79 hangars are spread across the northern and southern sides of the airfield. More than 250 aircraft of various types and vintages are hangared at Springs, making it a hive of recreational aviation activity.

A big thank you to everyone who attended and, especially, to the good folk of the Ekurhuleni East Flying Club for once again making the event such a welcoming occasion.

With good company, beautiful aircraft, aviation camaraderie and a free breakfast thrown into the bargain, what more could one ask for?

If you missed this year's gathering, make a note to attend the next one. The Springs Breakfast Fly-In is one event you really don't want to miss!
