PYRAMID AIR PARK FLY INN 17 TO 19 OCTOBER 2014

By Cheryl Smit

Pyramid Air Park is situated 12kms North West of Barberton which is surrounded by Nelspruit, Sabie, Graskop, Blyde Canyon, Hazyview, Komatipoort and Piggs Peak in Swaziland to name but a few. It is situated on 60 Hectares of Bushveld land with the magnificent backdrop of the Makhonjwa mountains and consists of 3 runways a chopper pad and 8 permanent hangars. It also has 6 Chalets and 2 Lapas. Pyramid Air Park is the ideal location for a weekend fly in.

When we arrived on Friday afternoon we were greeted by two Jabi's already on the ground that had flown in from Baragwanath. Later Ivan and Sonica Van Der Schaar arrived in their Pacer from Petit, followed by Rudi Greyling in his RV7. Weather kept more pilots from flying in which was a pity as the organisers Peter Lea and Brian Young had gone to great lengths to organise and cater for more incoming pilots.

Dinner was held in the Lapa around the camp fire, braai packs were available and pap and sous was provided.

Saturday morning brought beautiful weather and most of the pilots took off for a scenic flight around the area. Later a formation from Nelspruit consisting mostly of Piper Cubs arrived for breakfast.

The highlight was the arrival of the Mercy Air Kodiak 100 flown by John Herbert from White River. Mercy Air was established in 1991 as an independent faith based humanitarian-aid aviation service and from its base operates into Southern Africa. I was privileged to be invited by John and Anne Herbert for a flight in the Kodiak.

Peter Lea organised a TV and most of us watched the Rugby in the enclosed lapa while others chose to fly later in the afternoon. Saturday evening we were all treated to a lovely dinner of Curry and Rice around the camp fire.

Sunday morning brought beautiful weather and while some were preparing to leave after the breakfast, others arrived to spend the day at this awesome Air Park in the Lowveld.

A huge thanks to Peter Lea and his crew who went out of their way to accommodate all who flew and drove in and for organising a great weekend. We are all hoping that this fly in event becomes an annual event.

For those Pilots who are looking for a home away from home, you can own a 10% share of this paradise for only R500k.
