1 June: Baragwanath Airfield celebrates its 95th anniversary. The original airfield was created in 1919, with the Johannesburg Light Plane Club being formed in 1926. The club is still in operation today at the 'new' Baragwanath south of Lenasia and we are planning a good old fashioned fly-in to celebrate South Africa's aviation heritage and its future with a wide variety of aircraft present at the airfield on the day (old rubbing shoulders with new) and some great entertainment in the form of live music, vintage cars and motorcycles and period dress competition.

This included a breakfast which PSG Aviation sponsored in October 2013 at the famous Morgenzon Guesthouse, Conference & Weddings Venue opposite Wonderboom Airport, during which we enjoyed a lovely time with the Wonderboom Airport tenants. This is also the second consecutive year that we are the proud sponsor of the Johannesburg Special Rules Frequency chart.

Mbabane, Swaziland. The Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) Company of South Africa and the Swaziland Civil Aviation Authority (SWACAA) have signed a very important agreement, aimed at building essential aviation infrastructure that will unlock and stimulate regional economic activity - by contributing to a safe, efficient and reliable transport infrastructure within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Region.
Revenue generated from the collection of fees for over-flights will accrue to Swaziland. This is according to SWACAA Director General, Solomon Dube. "ATNS has a reputation of deploying the best efficient and effective aeronautical billing and collection system in the region, if not the continent".
The agreement is of a commercial nature, where ATNS will be providing a billing service for SWACAA, for all over-flights that include Commercial, Non-Commercial, scheduled and non-scheduled flights. This will result in more usage of new technologies for better efficiency in Communication, Navigation and Surveillance.
Dumisani Sangweni, ATNS Executive, Commercial Services said this signing builds on the strong relationship established between SWACAA and ATNS over the years. "It aims to strengthen the aviation system in the region and improve safety" he concluded.
In May 2013, the two entities signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Swaziland. Some of the provisions included in the initial agreement stated that ATNS would monitor aircraft which use Swaziland airspace, using specialist equipment that are able to observe aircraft as far as Mozambique and the Indian Ocean.
A joint project management team has - over the past year - been hard at work, making sure that the new agreement has all the loopholes covered before implementation.
A single African sky is a common vision shared by most if not all African ANSPs. And that includes ATNS and SWACAA. The two entities have been SADC VSAT Network Supervisory Board members since 1998. The VSAT Network has eliminated all communication deficiencies in the SADC region and is fulfilling the region's communication requirements in terms of the ICAO Africa/Indian Ocean (AFI) plan.
ATNS and SWACAA have several joint initiatives lined for the near future. These include training that has been specifically tailored, as part of the regional introduction of the new ATNS product, widely known as CAD (Centralized Aeronautical Database system), which is a single repository for all aeronautical information. This system will enable African States to link up to the database and make use of its benefits, which will be in the static information domain. It will allow for a free-flowing, transparent and open usage of aeronautical information. Innovative Aeronautical Information Services (AIS) and Aeronautical Information Management (AIM) functionalities will be used as cost-effective services.
Both parties are steadfast in their belief that this agreement represents a milestone in regional cooperation, tailor-made to meet the needs and expectations of the Air Traffic Management (ATM) community in the African continent.

Defence and security company Saab has successfully performed the first flight with the new sensor IRST (Infra Red Search and Track) which will feature in Gripen E, according to schedule. The IRST does not emit a signal and can, without revealing the aircraft's own position, silently detect, track and identify all types of targets.
"The first flight in the Gripen E test aircraft with IRST has been performed with very good results. Multiple targets were detected, tracked and identified and the system works perfectly as expected. IRST is a new sensor on Gripen, which allows pilots to see great distances in several directions," says Saab's Wing Commander Flying Hans Einerth.

The purpose of the test flight was to verify IRST functions and the integration onto the Gripen E aircraft. The integration and development work is progressing according to schedule.
IRST is a new sensor and located in the front of the aircraft. It does not emit a signal and can, without revealing the aircraft's own position, silently detect, track and identify all types of targets and is very useful against aerial targets with low radar cross section, such as stealth aircraft. The sensor is looking forward in a wide sector registering heat emissions from other aircraft, helicopters and from objects on the ground and sea surface.

Gripen E has significant performance improvements compared to previous versions, including a stronger engine, longer range, more weapons, new electronic radar and more advanced avionics. Today, Gripen is the backbone of five nations' air defences: Sweden, South Africa, Czech Republic, Hungary and Thailand. In addition, The Empire Test Pilot School (ETPS) in the UK uses Gripen in its training programme for future test pilots.

At a ceremony held at the Company's headquarters in São José dos Campos, Embraer this week delivered the first E175 jet to United Airlines. This aircraft is part of the contract signed between the two companies in April of 2013 for a firm order of 30 E175 jets.
The E175s will be operated by Mesa Airlines of Phoenix, AZ, under the United Express brand and are configured in a 76-seat dual class layout.

As the leader in the 70 to 130-seat jet segment, Embraer continues to invest in the E-Jets family which is flown by some 65 airlines from 45 countries.

Russian Helicopters, a subsidiary of Oboronprom, part of State Corporation Rostec, will showcase a range of commercial and military helicopters at the 14th Defence Services Asia exhibition and conference, which runs from 14-17 April in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The company's display will be on show at stand 3034 in pavilion 3.
Russian Helicopters sees the Asia-Pacific region as a key market and one with huge potential. Today more than 1,400 Russian-built helicopters operate in the region, including multirole models such as the Mi-8/17 series and Ka-32, as well as Mi-26T heavy transport helicopters and military helicopters.

The multirole Ka-32A11BC is one of the latest models that Russian Helicopters produces for the region. It is a unique Russian helicopter, which is used in more than 30 countries for fire-fighting, search and rescue operations and challenging construction work. Its coaxial design enables the helicopter to carry out difficult manoeuvres and achieve a high level of stability when hovering.
Russian Helicopters will showcase promising new models such as the Mi-171A2 and Ka-62 to helicopter operators and government officials. The Mi-171A2 has been developed based on the world-famous Mi-8/17 series and drawing on the rich operating experience of these helicopters around the world. It features modern technologies and solutions, and has been designed to meet the wishes of potential clients and operators. Another new model, the new medium commercial Ka-62, was created as a broad international collaboration project.

Russian Helicopters will also showcase military-transport models of the Mi-8/17 series (the Mi-17V-5 and Mi-171Sh), as well as the Mi-35M, created using new technologies and based on the legendary Mi-24 gunship. These helicopters are used worldwide and are renowned for their reliability, proficiency and robustness.
DSA takes place every two years in partnership with the Malaysian Defence Ministry and Malaysian Police, and attracts the attention of leading producers and customers of armaments and military equipment from around the world. DSA 2014 will cover areas including weaponry for ground-based troops, air defence, radio-electronic warfare and communications, aviation equipment, coastal defence, armoured vehicles and artillery systems, small arms and Special Forces equipment, naval equipment, and satellite and space technology as well as dual-purpose products.

From seats to galleys, the customer experience for furnishing the 737 just got easier
Boeing has debuted its new 737 Configuration Studio, a new facility where airline customers can choose their jetliner interiors. The 20,000 square-foot (1,900 square-meter) studio is located in Renton, Wash. near the factory where 42 737s are produced per month.
Similar to the 787 Dreamliner Gallery, the 737 Configuration Studio provides a private and welcoming showroom environment to assist Next-Generation 737 and 737 MAX customers with the design and configuration of new airplane interiors.
"Our customers make a large investment when they choose their interiors," said Beverly Wyse, vice president and general manager, 737 programs, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "This new studio offers one-stop shopping, eliminating the need for them to fly around the world to meet with different suppliers."

More than two dozen major interior configuration introductions are expected over the next two years. To help 737 customers select among them, the studio presents views of suppliers' products side by side in one location. Customers can see, touch and experience choices in galleys, seats and in-flight entertainment. They also can select interior colours and decors that highlight and support their brand.
Additionally, customers can use the 737 Boeing Sky Interior light lab to study how fabrics, carpets, drapes and uniforms appear under various light settings. The facility also houses the "new features room," which provides customers with a glimpse of future technologies.
The 737 is the world's best-selling commercial airliner, with production rate increases being put in place to meet demand. The new 737 MAX has more than 1,900 orders to date. First flight of the airplane is scheduled in 2016 with deliveries beginning in third quarter of 2017.

New BMW Interiors
Pilatus continues its longstanding partnership with BMW Group DesignworksUSA by offering 6 new interior packages and a new array of exterior paint schemes crafted exclusively for Pilatus. The palettes satisfy nearly every aesthetic from understated, to expressive and natural, to technical. In the Pilatus tradition, the interior designs combine modern style with a focus on function, quality, and innovation. Responding to the increased demand for the PC-12 NG in emerging markets, all BMW interiors will be available globally for the first time.
Electric Landing Gear
By replacing the PC-12's original hydraulic landing gear with a new electric system, PC-12 operators realize both weight and maintenance cost savings. The electric landing gear provides a 13 lb (5.9 kg) weight savings over the previous hydraulic system, and reduces the landing gear maintenance and inspection costs. The 2014 PC-12 NG is now an all-electric aircraft, similar to the most modern airliners.
External LED Lighting
The 2014 PC-12 NG is equipped with light emitting diode (LED) landing, taxi, recognition, navigation, and strobe lights. The tail-mounted strobe light has been eliminated by incorporating its function into the two wingtip strobes. The LED lights are even more reliable due to their solid state design, and produce more light than the incandescent bulbs employed in previous models of the aircraft.

Connected Flight Deck™
The new wireless Connected Flight Deck™ system is a set of four innovative iPad™ applications that interface with a wireless gateway system onboard the PC-12 NG. Each application is designed to enhance the efficiency of data exchanged between the aircraft, pilot, and maintenance personnel. The apps enable fast and simple wireless updates of airport, navigation and terrain databases, off-aircraft flight planning and uploading directly to the flight management system, maintenance and diagnostic recording with email to a service facility, and a moving map feature for passengers. This "industry first" was the result of a collaborative joint development effort between Pilatus, Honeywell, Jeppesen, and Aspen Avionics.
Wireless Entertainment System
Passengers can connect wirelessly to their favorite movies, music, and a moving map using their personal Wi-Fi enabled devices. An on-board media server with USB, Ethernet, and Wi-Fi inputs provides passengers the ability to easily connect and independently access stored movies, music, photos, XM satellite radio, and other content. The standard high resolution moving map display allows passengers to instantly track their location, speed, altitude, and remaining flight time. Pilatus also offers both satellite and ground-based options for in-flight Internet access for the North American market. The new wireless entertainment option, powered by the Emteq's eConnect™ system will be available mid-2014.
Gretener continued, "This year marks the 20th anniversary of certification of the PC-12, and global demand for the PC-12 NG remains very strong as we approach the 1,300th delivery. We will continue to innovate with new features and capabilities for the PC-12, as we still see a lot of future potential in this market segment."
The base price for the 2014 PC-12 NG is $3,850,000 with a typically equipped executive configuration priced at $4,642,000.
